CPW accepting feedback on proposed fishing regulation change at Scotland Peak Reservoir

MONTROSE, Colo. – Colorado Parks and Wildlife has proposed a change to fishing regulations for Scotland Peak Reservoir, also known as Broke Leg Slough. This is a small pond on the Grand Mesa, less than an acre in size.

CPW has planned a reclamation project on the pond to remove non-native trout with plans to restock native Colorado River cutthroat trout. CPW aims to establish a conservation population within the pond. Those fish can then be utilized for egg collection to propagate this special native species.

The reservoir is currently managed with standard bag limits of four trout per day with all legal bait and tackle allowed. The proposed regulation change would convert the reservoir to a catch-and-release fishery and require the use of artificial flies and lures only. CPW would require all fish be immediately returned to the water. CPW is proposing to eliminate the use of bait to reduce incidental hooking mortality when releasing fish.

The Grand Mesa contains more than 100 stocked and wild sport fisheries, most of which allow harvest and the use of bait. CPW believes this proposed regulation change would protect these rare fish while having negligible reductions to recreational angling opportunities in the area.

CPW will propose this regulation change to the Parks and Wildlife Commission at the Nov. 4-5 meeting.

CPW has conducted outreach to local anglers, the U.S. Forest Service and Trout Unlimited chapters but is interested in additional comments from anglers interested in this issue.
