UK Net Migration Drops to Lowest Level in Over Decade

(MENAFN) Net migration to the United Kingdom has fallen sharply to 171,000 in 2025, marking its lowest level since 2012 when excluding the COVID-19 period, according to official statistics released on Thursday.

Provisional figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) indicate that migration levels have continued a downward trend after reaching a peak of 944,000 in the year ending March 2023. The latest decline reflects a significant reduction in arrivals compared with previous years.

The data show that fewer non-EU nationals are coming to the UK for work-related purposes, with this category falling by nearly half and identified as the main driver of the overall decrease in immigration.

In total, approximately 800,000 people immigrated to the UK in the most recent reporting period, representing a notable drop compared with the previous year. At the same time, more than 640,000 individuals are estimated to have left the country, though emigration also declined slightly.

Separate figures from the Home Office show mixed trends in irregular migration. Small-boat crossings across the English Channel rose modestly over the same period, while asylum applications and the number of asylum seekers housed in temporary accommodation, including hotels, both decreased.

Authorities reported that tens of thousands of individuals arrived via small boats in the past year, contributing to an ongoing political focus on border control and migration management.

Government officials highlighted the overall decline in net migration as evidence of tightening immigration patterns, while also noting continued challenges related to irregular crossings and asylum processing pressures.
