UK PM Starmer Backs Labour Candidate Ahead of Makerfield By-Election

(MENAFN) British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has pledged full backing for Labour’s candidate in the upcoming Makerfield by-election, describing the race as an important political contest as preparations intensify.

Speaking to Labour staff at party headquarters, Starmer said the party would soon confirm its candidate but stressed that whoever is selected would receive his complete support.

“We will know very shortly who the candidate is. Whoever they are, I am going to support them 100%,” he said.

He also framed the upcoming vote as a direct contest between Labour and Reform UK, referring to the right-wing party led by Nigel Farage.

The by-election was triggered after Labour MP Josh Simons stepped down from Parliament.

His resignation was formalized through his appointment to the ceremonial post of steward and bailiff of the Chiltern Hundreds, the traditional procedure used for MPs leaving the House of Commons.

Simons had previously indicated support for allowing Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham to potentially stand in the seat, although Burnham has not officially confirmed whether he will enter the race.
